High School: Louisville Collegiate School
College Choice: Hampton University
Qiya Évan Kimbley is the daughter of a Whitney M. YOUNG Scholar alumnae. Her mother, Alix, was a member of the Class of 2002/Phase 7. Qiya joined the Whitney M. YOUNG Scholars Program® as an 8th grader, and she is currently a senior at Louisville Collegiate School. She also is an Educational Opportunity Scholar (EOS), having received support from Lincoln Foundation since the age of three.
Mayor Greg Fischer recently recognized Qiya as one of the 2020 Kentucky Lottery Outstanding High School Seniors Award recipients. She has taken AP biology, and she is a member of the Louisville Collegiate String Ensemble. During her freshman year, she was one of the five founders of the school’s Equality Coalition and later became one of the co-presidents during her junior year. Qiya also helped establish Collegiate’s first Black Student Union and has served as its president since her junior year.
Qiya plans to attend Hampton University in the fall where she will pursue a degree in psychology with a minor in business. Later, she plans to attend medical school to become an obstetrician and gynecologist and ultimately open a practice that provides comfortable and inexpensive maternity care for expecting mothers.
